In 1948 Mr. and Mrs. James Owens purchased a neglected 10-acre farmstead with an 1870 Federal Style brick home in disrepair. They subsequently subdivided and platted the acreage turning it into the first midcentury modern subdivision in the city. 2145 Owens Lane was the 1st home constructed on Owens Lane, built for the Vanderwerf family in 1951. In the early 1970s Ingrid and J.K. Lee purchased the home because of its large lot, mature trees and close proximity to KU. Only a few of the brick exterior walls still remain of the original home. The Lees enlisted Gordan Evans of Associated Designers and Architects of Kansas City to design the home. It took nearly 2 years to build. Today, the home is one of the most unique homes on Owens Lane and perhaps all of Lawrence. It is the only home in Lawrence with three pyramid roofs, one in the living room, one in the family room, and another in the garage. The home was created during a transitional period, exiting the midcentury era while emerging into postmodern architecture. The generous use of glass throughout the home blends seamlessly with nature and the 1.5-acre lot. Each room is bathed in natural light. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in a beautiful home that will provide pleasure. Topped off with a top-tier location, Owens Lane, the first midcentury modern subdivision in Lawrence.
