Welcome to paradise The first day we arrived at our new house, our neighbor who had lived on Ackley Lake all his life greeted us with these three words. As a young family with two small children, we were looking for a home away from home to build memories that our children would have for a lifetime. The special moments were abundant from the outset. Our kids ran around the back yard catching fireflies with their friends while the adults sat in the gazebo watching the swans on the lake, sharing with those close to us a little slice of paradise. As a nationally published decorator featured multiple times on HGTV, my wife transformed a cozy lake house into a beautiful, warm and inviting home where everyone feels welcome. We never imagined, on an all-sports lake, that our kids would spend the afternoon tubing behind a speedboat, then often be the only ones on the lake, jumping off the pontoon and having fun, filling the air with laughter as the sun began to set. Fourth of July was a particularly favorite source of memories as friends and family would gather on our pontoon in the center of the lake and watch the impressive fireworks that were launched from multiple residents in all directions. But some of the fondest times our kids had were actually in the winter. We would go to the local ski resorts and spend hours on the slopes, then return to our lake house and warm ourselves by the fire while talking about the day's adventures. The allure of this lake house is more than skin deep. While my wife expressed her talents in the house and in the garden, I made sure the heart of the house was kept modern and running well. Though it is bittersweet to part with a house that we have put our heart and soul into, we take comfort knowing it is ready to bring such happiness and pleasure, building memories in someone else's version of paradise.
