May 13th, 1931, The Times reported "Cade B Allen, developer of Allendale, announced yesterday that he is breaking ground at the corner of 9th and 38th Ave for a new 12 room stone house to cost $40,000 (a staggering sum during the depression). The house will be built in the English style.... The house will have five baths all in colored tiles and all appointments will be the most modern." The house has been maintained in pristine condition ever since. Some alterations, such as zoned central heat and air have been installed. The chauffer's room off the garage originally did not have access to the house proper. Now it has been incorporated as a home office off the den. The downstairs bedroom and adjoining bath were originally set aside for the live-in staff. A small list of the period features includes natural gum wood doors, window casing and baseboards, matching scalloped valance boxes, and an original folding iron gate at the top of the grand staircase. It was used to prevent guests from touring the private quarters during parties. The house is unbelieveably well built. The rooms are very spacious closet and storage space abounds. Set on four lots, the back yard contains a circular drive, two hidden gardens, and a 3rd garage that was originally designed to be the play house for a former owner's children. This was designed to be a grand home, and it remains so today. Serious inquiries only, please. U Tube Vidoe Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zF
