    What's special

Historic William Vaughan House - The 1st home on Western Prom c.1799 has been transformed into magnificent living space with original charm galore. Stunning gardens, patios and glimpse of the water, all make this a singular property. William Vaughan was a successful merchant who owned 400 acres when he built this house in 1799. That was most of the West End. Orchard Street is called by that name because it was the location of Vaughan's orchard. It was Vaughan's heirs who sold land to J.B. Brown for his grand estate on the Western Prom. William Vaughan was responsible for construction of the first bridge between Portland and South Portland, called Vaughan's Bridge until the mid-19th century. It is now replaced by the Veterans Bridge. The house was changed into 2 townhouses about 1870. The entrance to 387 Danforth with a porch on the East side was added in 1870, the central chimney was removed and a stair was inserted to create a pleasing floor plan with orientation to the water from the front and side on all three floors. A sunny breakfast room with skylights and direct access to the patio and gardens was added when the townhouse style duplex was made into a 2-unit condo in 2004. The gardens include a shingled shed to use as a workshop or potting shed. The easy maintenance perennial gardens also include a private seating area with dappled sunlight by a romantic grape arbor. The garden and yard are fully fenced in. Enjoy watching the Casco Bay Bridge center span open for freighters & tugboats on a daily basis. The gourmet kitchen opens directly to the outdoor living space on the first patio. Outdoor living here is not just an ideal or image - It is a reality! Enjoy a wonderful sense of privacy set off Danforth St while enjoying expansive Fore River views.
