A two-story, 1,056-square-foot brick house, built in 1880. Hardwood floors throughout, except for tile floors in the kitchen and bathroom. Just under a mile from the Metro North Hudson Line's Beacon Station, i.e., a 5-minute drive or a 16-minute walk. Full, unfinished basement and attic. Wrought-iron fencing with gate in front yard, chain-link fencing with gate in back yard, mostly masked by arbor-vitae hedge and rose trestles. The house is equipped with a baseboard heating system powered by a natural-gas furnace--but most of our winter heating needs are supplied by the Dutchwest woodstove on the first floor. Some of the improvements we have made since buying the house: Repainted all rooms, halls, and staircase in 03/2009. Installed new washer and dryer in 04/2009. Installed new natural-gas range in 06/2009. Remodeled kitchen in 11/2010: installed hammered-copper farmhouse (apron) sink, Brazilian black soapstone countertops, and antique solid-wood cupboards; shortened and repositioned kitchen island. Installed bluestone patio in backyard in 07/2013. Upgraded electrical service to 200 amps in 05/2015. Installed new natural-gas-fueled Generac 8-kW standby generator with transfer switch in 09/2015. Installed new roof in 06/2015, with Timberline Ultra HD "lifetime" asphalt shingles and 6' ice-and-water shields, and installed all new fascia, gutters, soffits, vent boots, and downspouts, and roof-and-gutter heating (ice-melt) cables. Plantings in the front yard: Wisteria that grows up the front (south) wall of the house. A flowering cherry tree. A boxwood hedge that we keep trimmed to about 18" wide and 26" tall. Peonies, irises, and thyme along the front of the boxwood hedge. Climbing pink roses on the wrought-iron fence. Strawberry plants in lieu of a lawn. Two blueberry bushes. Phlox, columbine, hydrangea, lilies-of-the-valley, bleeding hearts (pink and white), lavender; also, in half-whiskey-barrel planters: lavender, peppermint, and spearmint. A 4'x12' wooden-framed raised bed with trellis, in which we grow tomatoes. Plantings in the backyard: Arbor vitae hedges along the neighbor's chain-link fence, kept trimmed to about a 7' height. Thyme (as a ground cover). Wood-framed raised garden beds in which we grow a variety of herbs, vegetables, etc.
