Architectural Style: Prairie School Style The house is an excellent example of the Prairie school style designed during the Arts and Crafts movement by Martin V. Melhorn. Windows are original and have wavy glass. The floors are hardwood with an exceptional amount of long quartersawn oak boards (some boards measured 14 feet). The Batchelder tile fireplace has had some tiles restored and is encased with a wooden decorative surround., there are pocket doors, gumwood staircase, built in cabinets and tall floor moldings. The garage and apartment have a separate address of 1415 Monticeto Way. The garage is two stories with an original 378 square foot one bedroom one bath apartment upstairs. MELHORN SPEC HOUSE #2 (October, 2008) In 1927, Mayor John Forward moved to 4144 Lark Street and resided there the through 1937 and during his tenure as mayor (1931-34) of San Diego. He was involved in as many as 52 civic and social lodges/clubs and affiliations and was always looking towards the best interests of the city in all of his dealings. - He was given credit for developing a civic stadium (Balboa Stadium) and saw to its completion. - He concurred in plans and directed the payment of funds for the Cabrillo Bridge and all permanent building in the exposition area of Balboa Park in preparations for the 1915 California Panama Exposition. - He was active in promoting the development of highways and provided $2,500.00 for the construction of the highway along Mountain Springs Road entering Imperial Valley from San Diego and often contributed to roadway development projects. - He formed a trading company surveying and routing cargo from Central America with the aim of routing goods through San Diego as the terminus for shipping along the west coast. - He was also involved with bringing Colorado River water to San Diego and in his campaign press release predicted that the southwest would be a garden spot for the vast abundance of water that was going to be available from the Colorado River.
