The Thomas Poynton Ives House, c1803, is one of the most exquisite examples of the Early Republican period of architecture in Providence. Set on two acres, this three-story, brick structure was built by Caleb Ormsbee, a master builder. The home is an enduring monument to Adamesque-Federal style. Take in the city skyline as you approach the circular porch with Ionic columns, leading to the main doorway flanked by sidelight windows and topped by an elliptical fanlight. Step into the center hall, where Adamesque woodwork leads to main staircase, which spirals upward in a unique flourish. On the left is the fireplaced, dining room connected to a butler’s pantry and kitchen. Return to the center hall and into the drawing room with elaborate plaster molding gently lit by the room’s original crystal candelabrum and handsome fireplace. The adjacent library was renovated in the 1870s, when an oval west wall was added and the room was finished in black walnut. Multiple sets of French doors step out to the stunning rear terrace and grounds. Upstairs on the second floor is the fireplaced owner’s suite featuring an ensuite bath and an adjacent sitting room. A second, bedroom suite also enjoys a private full bath, while three more bedrooms, two sharing access to a full bath, continue the pleasing style. The third level offers additional living quarters.
