The beach is the perfect location for lobster bakes, campfires, and combing for sea glass.Since the town's incorporation in 1993 the island residents have increased services and stabilized taxes. About 200 residents call the island home year around. The population grows significantly during the warmer months, with many residents returning generation after generation. Many of the residents make their living in fishing and ocean related industries. Others make the daily commute to Portland for their work. As you travel down the bay and Hussey Sound, you will see Long Island in the distance. When you hear the sound of the #10 Bell Buoy, you will know you are home. From the deck of the ferry, you will see the, fire and rescue squad's floating ambulance, the town hall, the community rec center, the island convenience store and the post office. Further up the island is the school (Pre K-5), the Library and the health center. Depending on the time of day you will see the island fishing fleet unloading their daily catch.
