This uniquely renovated and expanded home in Grant Park came to be through true ingenuity and hard work. Originally a shotgun built in the 1890s, the building had been boarded up for years and was in an advanced state of deterioration. However, due to historic district regulations, it could not be moved or modified beyond much of its original facade appearance. In order to preserve the original structure and make the highest and best use of it, architect Adam Stillman developed an ingenuous plan to renovate the little shotgun and save as much of it as possible, and build a whole new "house" to the left of the existing one so that the lot looked like it had two houses on it, much like the rest of this section of the neighborhood looked 120 years ago. The "new house" on the left would be joined with the old by a central hallway and laundry room, while the new section would hold the kitchen, a mudroom, powder room, two guest bedrooms and a Jack-and-Jill bathroom. The resulting appearance of the new structure would create what's known as a "double shotgun" facade, and would meet the requirements of the Grant Park historic district regulations and pass the muster of the Atlanta Urban Design Commission. Today, the home encompasses approximately 1,733 square feet of living space completely outfitted with finish, fixture and design selections by Carl Mattison Design.
