In the heart of the French Quarter. This is a furnished original creole cottage built in late 1700's in the safest area of the Quarter. Located between Burbon and Royal St on Dumaine in a residential area. Walk to everywhere. It's my second hom and my preference is to do a month to month rental
I will rent for a single month for shorter term rental requests or longer rentals at certain times of the year.
Creole cottages from the late 1700s in the New Orleans French Quarter were pragmatic, ground-level homes built during the Spanish colonial era. Constructed after devastating fires in 1788 and 1794, they reflect a blend of French, Spanish, and Caribbean influences and were designed to accommodate the city's hot and humid climate.
Architectural features
Spanish influence: The cottages built after the fires were strongly influenced by Spanish building codes, which favored brick and stucco construction to prevent future fires.
Exterior:
The simple, one-and-a-half-story rectangular buildings were typically placed close to the property line and were made of stucco-covered brick or a timber frame filled with bousillage (a mixture of clay and Spanish moss). The exterior was often painted in bright colors.
Roof:
Early cottages built under Spanish rule featured flat roofs with low walls, a requirement intended to limit fire damage. However, the flat roofs proved ill-suited for the heavy rainfall. Most were later replaced with steeply pitched, side-gabled roofs featuring dormer windows.
Facade:
The street-facing side was symmetrical, with two sets of French doors flanked by large, vertically planked shutters. The dormer windows were also shuttered.
Interior: The typical floor plan had four rooms arranged in a square, with no interior hallways. A central chimney served fireplaces in the front rooms. The rooms opened directly into one another.
Courtyard:
A private courtyard, or patio, was located behind the main house. This outdoor space was surrounded by service structures, such as kitchens, stables, and slave quarters, and was not used as a garden until much later. A gated passage (porte-cochere) sometimes connected the street to the courtyard.
Rouse's Grocery is a few blocks away on Royal St, along wth great shopping. Also several blocks away is the Marigney aarea with live and renowned Jazz nightly.
The Marigny, more formally known as Faubourg Marigny, is a historic district in New Orleans, Louisiana, located east of the French Quarter along the Mississippi River. It is known for its vibrant local vibe, eclectic cultural scene, historic shotgun homes, and being a nexus of live jazz music and nightlife, particularly along Frenchmen Street. The district was laid out in the early 19th century by Creole developer Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville.
