Neighborhood Description A blend of old and new homes, Hammonton has a small-town feel but incorporates a very large area, much of it agricultural. There is a main street with unique shops and small businesses, where the town sponsors many holiday parades and festivities. There is a lake and recreational area where there are many summertime activities. There are numerous sports teams available to children and teenagers. There is an active Arts District which includes a 200 seat theater, an arts center, and an art museum. A new Senior Center has opened on the Hammonton Lake. Hammonton is known as "The Blueberry Capital of the World," but many other crops such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, peaches, and peppers are grown here. There are several local strip malls and numerous excellent restaurants featuring Italian, Mexican, Chinese, and of course American Cuisine. The town has the distinction of having the largest percentage of families of Italian decent (54%) of any town in the US, according to the 2000 census. Taxes are low by comparison to other areas of Southern New Jersey.
