MORE INFO AT TinyURL.com/EauClaireOffice .<.<..<.< From the Eau Claire Historic Preservation Foundation: The Dean-Griffin House is a bold interpretation of the Queen Anne Revival style, with a red brick first floor and “fish-scale” shingled upper floors. Steeply cross-gabled and asymmetrical, the building mirrors the contemporary trend of irregular exteriors, while retaining its own character. It’s two main facades are nearly identical at the upper levels. A prominent special front bay window at the ground level sits below a pedimented three part window and a lacy metal parapet-like decoration at the second level, in contrast to the many other smaller windows scattered around the house’s exterior. While not spindled like a classic Queen Anne, the white painted porch mirrors the other design elements of the house. It’s many overhanging eaves with decorative brackets and pedimented porch reflect other Queen Anne’s in the region, while retaining high integrity; and great romance in its appearance, especially with the foliage climbing up the structure’s walls. William Dean built the 920 Farwell House in 1885. He worked for Graham & White Sash and Door Company (which became Phoenix Manufacturing) as a general manager and later vice president. Local, state, and federal politician Michael Griffin bought the house in 1893 after moving to Eau Claire in 1876. He emigrated to America from Ireland in 1851, served in the Union Army starting 1861, and attained the rank of First Lieutenant under General William T. Sherman during the Civil War. After Griffin’s death on December 29, 1899, his widow Emma continued to live in the house until her death in 1923. She passed the home to Griffin’s former secretary, who then passed it onto her sister. Her sister’s son bought the home and eventually sold it to the [present owners]. Currently, the property is being used as an attorney’s office.
