Completed in 2008, the 5 Degree Residence (5D) was designed by Jerry Little, AIA of sead architecture + construction. It is named the 5 Degree Residence because the massive main concrete support wall is tilted 5%. This tilting gives the house incredible angles and geometry that you cannot get in a conventional home. 5D is as much a work of art as it is a dwelling. The 5 Degree Residence is a masterwork of architecture meticulously built of glass, steel, and concrete brought together to form shapes and create angles that echo the surrounding mountain terrain and frame all the breathtaking views from all sides. The home incorporates several green principals such as the use of low-maintenance and highly durable materials like Omni block insulated masonry, reclaimed metal siding, structural steel, stained concrete floors, Plyboo cabinets and paneling, shade sails, large overhangs, passive cooling and natural day-lighting techniques with clerestory insulated glass and a greywater system. From the street, you enter the house through a curtain of glass into a breezeway created by two large cast-in-place concrete walls. The two-story concrete wall slopes 24" out of plumb at a five-degree angle. The second floor truly highlights the City of Phoenix skyline and mountain vistas of Shaw Butte and North Mountain Desert Preserve. The 5 Degree Residence is genuinely one of the most iconic homes in Phoenix.
