Originally built in 1875, the house was the gate house to "the Castle" up the road at 53 Vista Road (formerly owned by the founder of the Boston Herald, Edwin Haskell. It moved to its current location on Hawthorne Avenue in 1900 and retains much of its period charm. The theme of the house is described as a 'stick style cottage' with 'jerkin-head' roof caps.
