Walking distance to everything and anything you could ever need or want, including: grocery stores (Ralph's; Bristol Farms; and Wild Oats); drug stores (Long's; CVS; Rite-Aid; etc.); myriad movie theatres; legitimate stage; concert hall (UCLA's Royce Hall); several very good museums; a fantastic new public library; restaurants galore (even an "In 'n' Out"!); all sorts of shopping; parks (including the extremely lovely Mildred B. Mathias Botanical Gardens one block to the North); the UCLA Medical Center Hospital and Clinics; a proliferation of churches and other places of worship; and finally, the W Hotel's (in-)famous clam-shaped-pool--right across the street! Because a car is not necessary to perform the chores and tasks necessary for living, nor is one necessary to take advantage of cultural, artistic, entertainment, and generally enjoyable leisure pursuits while living here, I tend to walk a great deal. Walking, I believe, lends the neighborhood a much more coherent feel, allows a person to get to know her or his neighbors, and certainly makes *me* feel a sense of belonging that I think would be difficult to find in a place where I had to jump in my car in the garage to go anywhere to do anything.
