While much of traditional style depends on the architecture of the space, a savvy renter with a few tricks of the trade can incorporate all of the elements without worry of losing that security deposit.

Start with the basics

Unless your rental is furnished, furniture is one of the main things you have control over as a renter, and it will make all the difference for traditional style. Simple pieces such as softly upholstered couches, wingback chairs and dark wood pieces are always at home. The mix of textures above is ideal: wood, upholstery, and subdued metal accents.

Use wallpaper

Yes, really. Wallpaper can be incorporated into a rental space. A graphic pattern brings traditional wallpaper into the new century. These days, reusable and repositionable wallpapers make adding pattern to a rental an easy investment. For traditional style, you’ll want to do only one accent wall as a focal point. Perhaps an even better idea? Wallpaper the interior of your bookcases for less commitment.

Incorporate curtains and drapes

Curtains can dramatically change the way a room feels, from a sheer to a heavy drapery. Traditional style frequently uses long drapes to add a sense of fullness to a room. This bedroom is a great example of mixing textures of curtains -- sheers behind the bed to filter light, and a satin drape on the side window for privacy.

Keep things classic

The calming, classic spa-like elements of this bathroom are easy to re-create in a rental since they are all portable items and soft goods. Beautiful but useful items on display are a hallmark of traditional style throughout the home. The neutral traditional color palette is an easy one for renters to replicate, since most rentals are painted in neutral tones.

Optimize open spaces

While traditional style is welcoming and comfortable, it’s also not overwhelming. Rentals can often be cramped for space, but keep as much open area as you can for a traditional look. This will make the space appear larger and let more light in, creating a vibrant feel so important in rentals.

Create atmosphere

Traditional style is deeply connected to nature, so bring plants and flowers into your rental space. This creates a classic year-round luxury appeal. Place them in traditional vases and terra cotta containers to complete the tableau. Candles also add atmosphere and are decorative when not in use. A few personal touches, such as family photographs, speak to the history of the style and your own space.

Incorporate stylish soft goods

Since traditional style is all about a welcoming appeal, plenty of pillows, blankets and, in the bathroom, comfortable towels, make all the difference. Create cozy spots and reading nooks with their own throws and pillows to invite relaxation. A stack of books at hand wouldn’t be remiss either.

Use accent lighting

Accent lighting, such as these two buffet lamps, greatly enhance any room with traditional styling. The warm glow sets off the old-fashioned elements well and highlights the details. Many rental spaces only have overhead lighting, so incorporate side and accent lighting with warm lightbulbs.
