Just as a home’s curb appeal sets the initial impression for home buyers, an agent’s vehicle is often the first thing buyers see when meeting their real estate professional. Your car can have a strong influence on potential clients’ perception of your services, dedication to the job and overall personality. Keeping your car clean and comfortable to ride in — while still making it an organized place for your signs and other on-the-road accouterments — can help show clients that you've got everything under control.
We asked agents and brokers for their feedback about maintaining a suitable vehicle for their real estate businesses. Here is what they had to say.
The car is an extension of my office and therefore an extension of the relationship I build with my clients. It has to have a personality that makes the client feel safe and comfortable when they are driving with me. It should evoke confidence and success without being pretentious. Steve McKenna, Your Home For Sale
Whether it's driving clients to view properties or using it as a 'mobile billboard,' in real estate, your car is part of your business. It can be a reflection of your personality and your brand. Everything you do creates your personal brand and your car is a piece of that picture. Laurie Weston Davis, The Geeky Girls
For me it's more about comfort since I'm driving all day long in the city. My clients meet me at properties about 98 percent of the time. If they are out-of-town clients, then I will use my car for touring purposes. Molly Cartwright, Cooper Jacobs
I would choose the car I currently drive which is a Mercedes Benz S550. I believe this is the best option for me because it is the perfect match of comfort and luxury. Carol Lee, Carol Lee Group
I almost bought a Tesla. Driving a Tesla lets people know you care about the environment but also keep up with the latest tech trends. Stephen FitzMaurice, Real Estate Agent PDX
I choose to drive the Range Rover Sport because it is roomy, comfortable and it has lots of glass so clients have a better view of the neighborhoods we drive through. Also, with the winters we've had in the Northeast recently, there's never an issue with getting through the snow. Steve McKenna, Your Home For Sale
Keep it clean! Have some water and maybe a little snack on hand for those long days out looking at properties. Also, if you keep an extra iPad for client use, you can load it with property info for them to view — no paper! Laurie Weston Davis, The Geeky Girls
Cleaning my car inside and out is a daily routine. It makes me feel more organized having a clean car. It's about $210.00 per month for gas and car washes. Molly Cartwright, Cooper Jacobs
The Range Rover has a number of client-friendly features. For example, it has a small built-in cooler and I keep water bottles on hand. It has a USB port so clients can charge their mobile devices. I have it cleaned a few times a week and I always make sure the radio isn't blasting when I turn it on. The annual excise tax, insurance, gas and maintenance runs approximately $6,000 per year. Steve McKenna, Your Home For Sale
I try and replace my vehicle every three years. This way I know the car will always be reliable and one of the most recent body styles. Carol Lee, Carol Lee Group
Every five years or less I pick up a new customized vehicle. Stephen FitzMaurice, Real Estate Agent PDX
Usually every four to six years. The technology changes so quickly and I spend so much time in my car. I like to keep up with the latest style and comfort features to provide the best possible experience for clients. Steve McKenna, Your Home For Sale
I do not, though I have looked into it. As more models become available I will certainly consider it. Many of the options available in the past just weren't large enough or cost effective. Laurie Weston Davis, The Geeky Girls
My car is not eco-friendly, but I have considered a Tesla as an eco-friendly option. Ultimately, I haven’t been able to make the switch as I don’t feel comfortable with the distance restrictions of an electric vehicle. Carol Lee, Carol Lee Group
