Now that the for-sale signs are down and your happy clients are settling into their new homes, you have the opportunity to continue your connection with them in this new phase of your relationship. These clients can become a valuable source of referrals and repeat business with one thoughtful gift.
We asked the Zillow Premier Agent community about the gifts they give to former clients as a way to show their appreciation and keep in touch.
Here are five memorable gift ideas to show your clients you care.
1. Charitable donations
Take note of charities near and dear to your clients' hearts. Are your homeowners pet people? Think about a donation to a local rescue. Do they love nature? Local park and trail organizations can always use help! Welcome them to the community by donating on their behalf. It’s a gift that will warm their hearts, and who knows, they may be inspired to get involved with the organization.
Erik Hatch of Hatch Realty in Fargo, ND gives gifts that make a difference. “Our company and our agents each make a donation to Sell a Home, Save a Child in honor of the clients,” he explains. “e impact the world through this charity.”
2. A bottle of bubbly
Closing on a house is a thrilling milestone that should be celebrated, especially for first-time buyers. Ian Batra of Keller Williams Bay Area Estates in Los Gatos, CA presents his clients with a bottle of Champagne with every set of keys.
Have a client who doesn’t drink? Specialty sodas, homemade cookies and gourmet coffee beans are just as appreciated. You’ll meet clients at coffee shops, local bars and maybe a restaurant or two as you go over your paperwork and explore the area. Take note of what they order so when you’re ready to celebrate with them, you know exactly what will bring a smile to their face.
3. Something uniquely personal
You listened to what your clients want in a home — and you heard their stories about their families. Being an attentive agent and mindful listener is a practice we can all celebrate, and Ian Batra doesn’t stop at the Champagne.
“I follow up with a personal visit with a custom gift basket stocked with stuff for the whole family and pets after they move in.”
Need ideas? We suggest treats for the family pup or cat, seasonal toys for the little ones or potted plants (being mindful of those that are toxic to pets and toddlers) to instantly cozy up a new space. Building a personalized present, like a gift basket, is a simple and effective way to show a client you’ve been paying attention and that you care about their family.
4. A practical presentnNothing says “You’re home!” like your first home-cooked dinner in a new house. Sean Moore of RE/MAX Boone Realty in Columbia, MO gives his happy homeowners a set of knives.
Cyndi Lesinski of JohnHart Real Estate in Valencia, CA literally welcomes her clients home with a new doormat.
Are your clients moving to a place with a bigger yard? Grilling accessories, a fire pit or patio string lights make perfect backyard presents. Practical gifts have a way of making new homeowners feel instantly at home.
5. Get artsynHeartfelt and impactful, a homemade gift is always a great idea — and bonus points if it livens up your client's new home or outdoor space! Cathy Abramson of Visionary Properties Realty in Gilbert, AZ paints a personalized wooden pumpkin so that her clients can spice up their home for fall.
Not the crafty type? Check out Etsy’s handmade goods for personalized, seasonal and home state-inspired gifts and décor. Or, go local. Pick up a gift at the neighborhood craft fair, holiday market or artist's booth at a farmers market. Don’t forget to share the maker with your seller (grab their business card to wrap with the gift) so they can support local artisans in their new community.
