Where to Avoid Freddy This Halloween (Krueger, That Is, Not Mac…)
Think your dreams (or nightmares) are safe from the murderous Freddy Krueger, just because you don’t live in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio? Think again. There are 92,225 homes inauspiciously located on one of the 2,376 Elm Streets nationwide.

There are 92,225 homes inauspiciously located on one of the 2,376 Elm Streets nationwide, according to a recent Zillow analysis. In fact, residents in 17 of the largest 25 cities in the country should be vigilant while sleeping, as each of those 17 cities has at least one Elm Street. Interestingly, there is no need to be sleepless in Seattle – home to Zillow HQ – as the city has no Elm Streets (and if you’re living in a city with an Elm Street, and would like to lessen the risk of being murdered in your sleep, Zillow is hiring). The most at-risk city for sleep-hauntings is Phoenix, Arizona, with 1,147 homes located on an Elm Street or a directional variant, like North Elm Street, etc.
Homes on Elm Streets are generally worth much less than other homes nationwide. The typical home on an Elm Street has an estimated value of only $116,953, compared to the national median of $182,500 (as of September 2015). And while we can’t say definitively if it’s the vengeful ghost of a fictional serial killer that’s murdering home values in these areas, we also can’t rule it out.
But there are some ritzy Elm Streets scattered across the country that Freddy must not have gotten to yet. Of all Elm Streets nationwide with at least 50 homes, South Elm Street in Hinsdale, Illinois, is the most valuable, with the median home on the street valued at slightly more than $1.4 million.
The map below shows all the locations of U.S. Elm Streets with at least 50 homes. Use the filters to see where the most valuable, largest and numerous Elm Street homes are located.
Happy Halloween, and sweet dreams, from Zillow Research!
