Republicans and Democrats differ in how they see the fairness of property taxes, according to the Zillow Housing Aspirations Report survey. While members of both parties are equally concerned about rising taxes pushing them out of their homes, Republicans believe property taxes are unfair to high-income households, while Democrats think they’re unfair to low-income households.
One reason could be that people tend to believe taxes are unfair to them, personally. Asked whether they believe property taxes are unfair to them, respondents from both parties responded “yes” equally. Fifty-one percent of Democrats and 50 percent of Republicans believe that the property tax rate in their community is unfair to them. And there are more high earners among Republicans than Democrats, which corresponds to their answers regarding unfairness to high- and low-income households.
