A House for the Birds: The Best Places to Find Real Estate with Turkeys

  • Missouri has the most for-sale home listings that make specific mention of “turkey” in the description.
  • Alaska features the lowest number of listings calling out turkeys.
  • Do holiday airport departure delays ruffle your feathers? Is the thought of frantically cleaning before the in-laws arrive putting you in a fowl mood? Do you think hunting for Black Friday deals is for the birds?

This year, consider swapping those unsavory chores for the Thanksgiving traditions of yore: Hunt, track, clean and bag your own Thanksgiving turkey!

Zillow has identified the areas with the most properties fit for a DIY Thanksgiving feast, based on regions with the most property listing descriptions that mention turkeys. Not surprisingly, states located in the middle of the country had the highest concentration of these listings.

The states with the most turkey listings since 2012:

    • Missouri (1,150 listings)
    • Wisconsin (897 listings)
    • Michigan (893 listings)
    • Kentucky (495 listings)
    • Texas (425 listings)

At the metro level, Springfield, Mo., led the way with the most listings, followed closely by Kansas City, Mo., and Madison, Wis.

Places with the lowest incidence of turkey mentions include Nevada, Washington D.C. and Alaska.

To account for differences in the sheer number of homes in a given area (ie., an area with many more homes may rank at the top of the list simply because of a larger number of homes potentially for sale in turkey-laden areas) we also computed a ratio of the number of turkey listings per 10,000 properties, regardless of the property’s for-sale status.

These rankings surfaced a similar list, with a few smaller states climbing the rankings ladder:

    Methodology

The rankings were calculated by finding all listings on Zillow since 2012 containing the word turkey, then filtering out those that referenced locations or points of interest where the name contained the word “turkey” (places like “Turkey Creek” or “Turkey Road”). This left us with approximately 10,000 listings where most of the mentions of turkey referred to game located on or near the property.
