Bringing Zillow to Kubernetes Community Day

What do sunny weather, a group of tech enthusiasts, and a set of Kubernetes conferences have in common?

The answer is attending a Kubernetes Community Day (KCD). As a product manager for Zillow’s Product Platform team, I had the opportunity to participate in this event, which is well known for sparking and engagement within the tech community.

Kubernetes Community Day in Guadalajara is an event driven by the community, focusing on Kubernetes and cloud-native technologies. My mission? To showcase Zillow, the leading U.S. real estate marketplace with approximately 365.8 million monthly visits, to the vibrant Mexican tech community.

Alongside my colleagues, I aimed to continue building Zillow’s presence in Mexico, engage attendees in insightful career conversations, and expand our TalentNetwork. I shared details about Zillow’s commitment to helping more and more people get home, current job openings and the enticing benefits that make Zillow an employer of choice.

Meaningful moments from the day

One of the most resonant moments for me was witnessing the engagement of the participants. It was encouraging to see so many attendees listening attentively to the conferences and taking notes, which underscored the importance of continuous learning. I had the pleasure of connecting with several attendees who stopped by the Zillow booth, most of whom had heard of Zillow and were familiar with our brand. It’s a great sign that Zillow is making meaningful progress in building recognition and interest here in Mexico.

I would say that approximately 300 participants joined the sunny morning event in Guadalajara, and I even ran into a former colleague from years past — an unexpected yet nice reunion.

KCD presented several keynotes and breakout sessions. One session that particularly resonated with me focused on hardening platforms. As a product manager, this is a crucial aspect of my responsibilities, and hearing experts in the Kubernetes space reiterate the importance of a hardened platform was invaluable.

Our booth was particularly attractive to attendees — Zillow colleagues were engaging with conference-goers, and it was gratifying to see attendees approach us to inquire about open positions while others were engaged in conversation.

Zillow’s presence at such events is essential. We are known for leading edge technology, and events like KCD are beneficial for the Mexican tech community. They provide an opportunity for us to showcase our advancements and establish connections with potential talent.

For participants wishing to make an impact at events like these, I advise clearly expressing awareness of and interest in the Zillow brand, articulating how their skills align with our goals and highlighting relevant contributions from their current or previous roles. Demonstrating a genuine connection to our mission of making home a reality can make a strong impression on potential hiring managers.

Empowering talent through community engagement

Ultimately, I hope attendees leave with a deeper understanding of Zillow’s mission to help more people get home.

When searching for a job, it’s vital to align with a mission statement that resonates personally and enhances the purpose of our work, regardless of the department or area of expertise. Events like these provide invaluable opportunities to meet real people at Zillow who contribute to making home a reality for more people.
