Guadalajara never disappoints.
Last week I had the privilege of joining an engineering meetup hosted by Zillow — part of how we’re growing our Cloud HQ tech in Mexico. This time not as a speaker, but supporting our Talent Brand & Attraction team.
We had a full house, with nearly 100% attendance. True to meetup tradition, we kept it authentic: great tech talks, good beers and real conversations with incredibly talented engineers. The expertise in the room was undeniable, and every chat left me impressed by the passion and depth of knowledge within the community.
One of the questions I was asked has stuck with me since: “What’s the differentiator that Zillow has as a company to work at?”
For me, the answer is clear: growth potential. Many Mexican engineers face challenges advancing beyond the senior engineer level. At Zillow, we break through that barrier with transparent career paths and clear expectations, empowering engineers to grow on their own terms — whether as individual contributors or people managers. That single conversation captured what makes Zillow special, and why we are working hard to connect with more engineers across Mexico.
Another highlight was seeing how much attendees valued the chance to connect directly with Zillow engineers, managers and directors. Because Zillow Cloud HQ is still relatively new in Mexico, these face-to-face conversations sparked genuine curiosity, interest and excitement. It was a chance to “turn on the lights,” make the implicit explicit and share openly about who we are and how we work.
And speaking of turning on the lights, Raúl’s talk on abstractions framed perfectly how we continuously work to build a great platform. He explained how we reduce complexity and increase flexibility across our systems, which is critical for scaling a company like Zillow. He also showcased our open-source library Datarouter, a tool we not only maintain and use internally, but also share with the broader tech community. This was the perfect example of Zillow’s Cloud HQ culture in action: we build for scale, we play to win by pushing boundaries, and we own it by maintaining and contributing back to the ecosystem.
At Zillow, we live by our values: “We Play to Win” and “Own It.” These aren’t just words — they come to life in Cloud HQ through the way we build powerful internal tools, automate processes and create a developer experience designed to scale without friction.
Imagine this:
We build internal monitoring tools that give us deep visibility across systems. Built by engineers, for engineers.
We abstracted the API consumption, by taking Datarouter endpoints and automatically generating React hooks to consume them directly. No manual wiring, no boilerplate, just speed and clarity.
Thanks to our abstraction layers, engineers can spin up a new React app with a single CLI command. Permissions, roles, pipelines? All handled automatically.
Our CI/CD pipeline is seamless and automated, letting us focus on delivering value instead of wrestling with infrastructure.
All of this means that at Zillow, engineers don’t just code — they create at scale with freedom. The developer experience is designed to eliminate friction, empower experimentation and accelerate impact. That’s why working here feels different.
For engineers looking for that next step in their career, this is what sets Zillow apart: the chance to work at a world-class company, contribute to transformative technology and grow beyond limits.
