Last month, I had the opportunity to present at the Zillow Engineering Meetup in Mexico City — and it was incredibly rewarding, especially since the focus was on big data. As a senior big data developer, this was actually my first time presenting at a meetup like this, so I’ll admit I was a bit nervous.

But speaking to 50+ talented data engineers about how we leverage technologies like Databricks to solve real business challenges really highlighted the caliber of talent in Mexico’s tech community.

Sharing real-world data solutions

The highlight for me was the Q&A session. The audience dove into the technical details of our revenue reporting tables for a new business initiative, questioning some of our design decisions and architectural choices. I loved the technical back-and-forth — it was energizing to explain our approach and hear new perspectives. It showed how engaged and thoughtful this community truly is.

As a panelist, I covered how we built a comprehensive set of tables to power revenue reporting and how these technical solutions directly translate to solving real business needs. It felt incredible to represent Zillow and share insights from our day-to-day work with fellow engineers. Being able to pull back the curtain on how we approach complex data challenges was both humbling and energizing.

Attendees were especially interested in our technology stack, the collaborative nature of our work and what it’s like to work remotely in Zillow’s Cloud HQ. The conversations naturally flowed from technical discussions to questions about our work environment, on-call rotations and company culture.

Building connections across borders

It’s important for Zillow to show up in spaces like this. The Mexican tech community is incredibly strong and growing rapidly. Events like these create authentic connections with talented engineers who might not otherwise learn about the opportunities we offer. For engineers in Mexico specifically, these meetups provide exposure to different approaches, technologies and career paths — including remote opportunities with global companies like ours that they might not have considered.

My advice for participants who want to make an impact at events like these is to come prepared with genuine curiosity. Don’t just pitch — engage in real technical conversations. Be ready to share specific examples of your work and be open about both successes and challenges. The best connections I made were through authentic technical discussions rather than formal networking.
