    What's special

This home was not sold in 2011 for 80,000.00. Zillow has posted this incorrectly and refuses to correct it. The Worth -Knox House was built in 1912-1913. It was designed by C.C.Hook one of North Carolina's most famous architects who also designed The Van Landingham estate and the Belk Mansion in Charlotte as well as many public building and train stations throughout the state. He was the architect for the Dilworth neighborhood in Charlotte and the Brem House in Charlotte. The house is a remarkable example of early Craftsman Design boasting many iconic craftsman features such as a fireplace inglenook, interior woodwork, beautiful columns in the living room, stairs that wrap around the central fireplace, stunning windows, original light fixtures and hardware, and both original claw foot tubs. The unique concrete feldspar bricks were made on site in 1912. The downstairs floor are original oak and the upstairs floors are hemlock. The oral history of the house says that the wood was cut on site. The sleeping porch upstairs can serve as a 6th bedroom and has a lovely view of the distant NC mountains. The lot is very large at right under an acre, plenty of room to add a garage and pool. The home is not fully restored but has been rewired, the chimneys have been rebuilt, electrical to pole has been put under ground, new roof, replaced damaged fascia boards and rafter tails, reinforced roof with collar bracing and troughing, plaster repair throughout , remodeled upstairs bath, landscaping, new sheet rock ceilings in upper hall, butler’s pantry, bathrooms, master upstairs and closet, new water heater, new paint thorough out most of house, professional plaster repair throughout with most of the original plaster walls still intact. and a lot more. The kitchen and downstairs bath still need to be remodeled but you can make them your own. Both are in working order but both require remodeling. The gas heating system is only about 10 years old but could be expanded. Most of the remaining work is cosmetic. The house is sold with historic easement through the North Carolina Preservation Society in accordance with its historic value to the state of North Carolina. It is one of the earliest examples of the craftsman style in the state, we have copies of the original blueprints for the house and gardens. The house has six working fireplaces and flues for two wood stoves, two master suits and a nursery, there is also, an, a garden covered shed, apiary, coop and raised bed garden area. We have lived happily in the house for almost 9 years but it is still a work in progress. We are the second owners, we purchased it from the original family. The Worth Knox House is a piece of North Carolina and architectural history, it is also a wonderful light filled home with an enormous amount of detail and personality. The commute to downtown Charlotte is about 35 minutes but will be less when highway sixteen is four lanes all the way, this is now being finished. For information call 828-514-1436. Ask for Jon.
