Built in 1828 by Merritt Booker, a transplanted Virginian, this genuine gem of a house represents one of Middle Tennessee's courageous modern day restorations. In the 1880s the ownership was transferred from the Booker Family to Jonas Ingram, the grandfather of the man who would rescue this fine old house from the ashes of the past. Damaged by the whims of neglect and harmed by the weight of too many years, the Booker Place must have seemed like an impossible task when the owner and craftsman, Dan Ingram, began his labor of love in the mid-1960's. Today, from its charming cellar Keeping Room to its multi-dormered roof, this modest Maury County gentleman, with his keen eye for detail and a few blessings along the way, performed a restoration miracle. In putting together pieces of the past puzzle of the Booker Place, Mr. Ingram made two important discoveries - a portion of one of the original front columns and an old chest of carpenter's tools containing a number of shaper bits that matched the existing interior moldings. Sharpening of the old bits enabled this meticulous craftsman to run off each of the interior moldings that had to be replaced. Those that appreciate excellent craftsmanship and fine houses of early Middle Tennessee must always be indebted to Dan Ingram. He was a humble and ingenious man who accepted an impossible task and made it possible. In August 1985, The Booker
