Designed in 1954 by renowned Modernist architect George Matsumoto, the iconic Poland-DeFeo House is a classic example of Matsumoto's genius. Built in Raleigh, overlooking Crabtree Creek, the house faced an uncertain future in the late 1990's and early 2000's as it was threatened by rampant development. In an effort to save the house from demolition it was donated to Preservation NC in 2001. Soon after, Don DeFoe, a Modernist enthusiast, was made aware of the house and set about finding an appropriate spot for its relocation. DeFeo soon discovered a rural 24.3 acre gently sloping parcel, complete with meadows, a pine forest and views of the Little River Reservoir. He hired Durham architect Ellen Cassilly to oversee the restoration and renovation, and design a lower level quest suite. This absolute jewel of a house was listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 and in 2005 won a prestigious Merit Award from AIA North Carolina. Enjoy a life away from it all with easy access to Durham and Duke University as well as Chapel Hill and RTP.
