The Foster Carling Residence, 1947-1950 by John Lautner FAIA. Perched atop a knoll in the Hollywood Hills with framed views of downtown, across the city and into the valley, this home showcases Lautner at his best. The hexagonal designed roof is suspended by external steel masts allowing for floor to ceiling walls of glass helping to blur the line between indoors and out. The pool enters into the heart of the living room bisected by a glass wall that opens and closes with a push of a button. The Western wall with it's built in sofa was designed to swing out onto the deck to create the Hikea, a Hawaiian term for "platform of gatherings." Gorgeous redwood walls, polished concrete floors and interior rock features help create this amazing setting. The iconic Carling Residence is considered to be one of Lautner's greatest designs.
