Conceived of as an upscale residential neighborhood in an English Park setting. The site plan was laid out by architect Philip Maher. ***It featured curving streets with expansive lawns lined with stately old oak trees and new elm trees. Each lot had a 50' setback. The park-like setting for substantial homes was enhanced by ornamental street lamps, stone entrance lamp posts and underground utilities. *** Ralph Stoetzel and other important architects designed homes in Indian Hill Estate. They included Prairie School architects Barry Byrne and Walter Burley Griffin as well as Mayo & Mayo, Spencer S. Beman and Rapp & Rapp. George Fred Keck designed 26 residences, including three for the Bills Brothers. Keck, who became famous for his solar houses, designed almost all of the houses in Indian Hill Estates in traditional styles, primarily Tudor. The final house in the subdivision, however, was Keck & Keck's 1936 International Style Herbert Bruning House. No further building activity took place in Indian Hill Estates from then until after World War II. *** Is there a new home in Wilmette, or nearby you admire and would build your own, we can provide contact info for most builders and architects, feel free to inquire.
