    What's special

This gracious classic southern plantation home stands proudly just outside the City Limits of Historic Washington, Georgia on lands referred to in the earliest deeds from George Walton to Thomas Wingfield 1794, as the "land on the ridge". When the wealthy young Nicholas Long came from North Carolina to live in Washington and begin his large land dealings, he bought this property, built (or added to) the original dwelling and named his country seat "Belmont". Nicholas long was a town leader, an active politician in early Georgia affairs and said to be by a newspaper, " the most accomplished Southern gentleman." Through the passing of time this prestigious plantation has been home to many prominent families including the Callaway and Telfair families! It was the scene of the brilliant marriage festivities in 1806 of Margaret Long to Thomas Telfair, the son of Governor Telfair. Home to the Thomas Callaway family in the 1840's, many a fine Sunday picnic was host on its spacious grounds which even to this day continue to have an array of old period plantings, trees, flowering shrubs and blooms along with its carriage stepping stone. Prior to the present owners the home had remained in the same Wilkes County family for some 82 years, passed down generation after generation. The original house was built in the shape of a "T" with six large windows across the front on both the first and second stories. The mantles and wainscoting throughout the home are indicative of the houses at the turn of the century. Gorgeous random width heart of pine floors, eight fireplaces with beautiful tall mantles, cross hall entry foyer with arches and the slightly steeper original staircase are just a few of the outstanding features of this plantation home! There are four bedrooms, three baths; approximately 4,500 square feet on the first and second floors in addition to a semi-finished basement with open floor plan of approximately 1,096 square feet from which the massive hand hewn beams which support the house can be seen. There are also two fireplaces in the basement which offer many possibilities and potential for this space. On the main level are formal parlor, formal dining, large den/gathering room, library/office,breakfast room, kitchen, guest bath, mud room, master bedroom (wood burning fireplace) and master bath (claw foot tub/shower). Second floor has 3 large bedrooms (two with fireplaces) and one bath. Large paned windows bath the rooms with natural light. A ladder leads to the attic for one to view and marvel the construction of this early historic home. Lovingly renovated by the present owners, the home continues to peacefully watch over the lands on the ridge. It is flanked on each side by beautiful green hayfields and shaded by massive oaks . There is a small vineyard and a variety of wonderful weathered century old barns from two story with lofts to mule stables. Mature hardwoods cover the rear of the property as it falls to quiet flowing stream. The atmosphere is that of a much simpler place and time. An Opportunity of a Lifetime awaits! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkKy80WhLwk
