The property above is part of the former 8,000 acre plantation of John Randolph of Roanoke (1773-1833). He was the Minister to Russia and served in both Houses of Congress. He was also a direct descendant of Pocahontas. Patrick Henry had his last debate against John Randolph of Roanoke at Charlotte Court House in March of 1799 the issue at hand...States' Rights. Henry denied the right of a state to oppose oppressive Federal Laws, Randolph affirmed that right. Patrick Henry died three months later. RANDOLPH, VA is the site of the Battle of Staunton River Bridge at which on June 25, 1864 a hastily assembled and vastly outnumbered force of Confederates held off a determined raid by 5,000 Union cavalrymen. The Confederacy likely survived a year longer due to the courage of the men and boys who fought at Staunton River Bridge. IRONICALLY though just 26 miles North of Randolph, VA on April 9th 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Robert E. Lee's command surrendered to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant of the Union Army. FROM RANDOLPH, VA within a distance of 20 miles the Staunton River becomes the Roanoke River that empties into the John H. Kerr Reservoir known in Virginia as Buggs Island Lake. Being Virginia's largest lake of 50,000 acres of fresh water and over 800 miles of beautiful shoreline, it is listed by ¢??Fisherman" magazine as the best Crappie fishing lake in the US. However if it's Small Mouth Bass or Stripers you are after, the Staunton River is in most peoples' opinion maybe the best. TRAVELING NORTH in Western Charlotte Co. from Patrick Henry¢??s Red Hill via Hwy 40 and County Rd. 672 to Red House, VA your can clearly see Peaks of Otter to the West and the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond Lynchburg.
