    What's special

Living History! It is so rare that one of these stone gems comes to market, particularly one that has been so lovingly maintained through the years, located just at the edge of the Hamlet of Stone Ridge, and surrounded by lovely gardens. The original stone section of this home was constructed c. 1770 by the Roosa family, descendant's of Captain AH Roosa, a Dutch emigre who arrived on the boat "Spotted Cow" in 1660. The addition of the clapboard section doubled the size of the house in the late 1800's. As construction began on the Aqueduct in the early part of the 20th century, the second floor was divided into nine bedrooms, to accommodate construction workers. Some of these original room numbers can still be seen on the doors! The original stone cistern, and hand dug well, laid in stone, and the stone oven in basement are still present, although retired from use today. This home retains many original features, such as wide board and plank flooring, the great fireplace in the living room, and the charm and sense of permanence that is a part of these great structures. Today, the house has three bedrooms and a large family room (could be used for a fourth bedroom) on the second floor. On the first floor, the kitchen with wide board floors and tin ceiling leads to a warm and cozy dining room, aglow with period woodwork. The original stone section contains a large foyer and the living room with massive fireplace. One wall of the living room is parged stone, which could be uncovered to show the original stone work. Beautifully landscaped yard and gardens frame the house, and these are in turn framed by a canopy of woods. Up the driveway towards the back of the yard is a restored barn, with garage and large workshop on the first level, and a large finished studio space on the second floor. Up the hill from the house, the view from the studio windows is panoramic over the neighboring hills and mountains, as well as the properties wonderful gardens.
