In the 1950s, the midcentury modern aesthetic in architecture was dominated by a number of excellent architects educated at the University of Southern California. Names that are famous today include Pierre Koenig, Conrad Buff, Donald Hensman and Frank Gehry, all of whom attended the School of Architecture in the early 50s. Amidst this distinguished pack of the leaders of the modernist style, Richard R. Leitch also earned his degree in architecture. He went on to design several homes in Altadena and one that we know of in Eagle Rock, at 2030 Estes Road, before he relocated to the Newport Beach area and continued his distinguished career. On Estes Road, a three-block-long street of custom homes built mostly in the 50s and 60s, you are close to shops and eateries but removed from the bustle of the City of Los Angeles. At 2030 Estes, midcentury bones survive - from the wood-panelled, open beam, vaulted ceilings to the open floor plan of the living room divided from the dining room by a central fireplace. The gracious indoor-outdoor style features sliding glass doors that open from the dining room and kitchen to the patio and deck, and stretch out to the pool and cabana. Nestled on a private 14,000 square foot lot and tucked down and away from the street, views are mostly of trees, with peeks across the Eagle Rock Valley.
