Designed by renowned Texas architect Ted Maffitt, the house incorporates unique wood paneling and detail using wood originally designated for luxury Pullman cars. The house was built by Wayne E. Carter, a former railroad engineer and cabinetmaker who used the exquisite wood details throughout the house, including the staircase, living room walls, library bookcases and doors. He did much of the interior work himself - building the cabinets, carving the staircase, and putting in the 3/8" paneling. He had collected the wood for years and took great pride in his workmanship. He crafted the fine wood floors, stained molding and solid doors - made to match each room - throughout the house. The library also adjoins the terrace through stained-glass doors.
