Enjoy waterfront Maine along the tidal St. George River. Quiet and secluded but not remote. This unique historic home was constructed in 1793 and served as General Henry Knoxs office for the Georges River Canal. General Knox operated the canal until his death in 1806. The canal system was used to primarily transport lumber. The house is filled with original architectural details such as hand-hewn beams and trim. It is a simple home with the essential amenities for your Maine get-away or remote work. The Canal House is situated at the head-of-tide (the highest point up-river where the river is affected by the tide of the ocean) on the St. George River. You can enjoy the daily rhythms of the shifting high and low tides from the yard. The river is a working river with fisherman fishing for elvers and alewives in the spring months. Wildlife is abundant and varies by season; eagles, osprey, songbirds, occasionally beavers and otters, as well as snapping turtles who like to bask in the sun on the rocks. You might occasionally see a few deer or a groundhog. Bring your kayaks and paddle down the river along with the tide to Penobscot Bay. The towns of Rockport, Camden, and Rockland are a 15-20 minute drive. Sandy and rocky beaches are within a 20-minute drive. The grounds offer a respite to lounge along the banks of the river to relax and enjoy your time here in Maine. Maine Sport Outfitters have locations in Rockland and Rockport and offer kayak and bike rentals. Pets possible on a case-by-case basis. Lightly furnished from September 2024 - May 2025. Non smoking, pets may be considered. $2,000 a month includes utilities. 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom quiet historic waterfront house in downtown Warren Maine.
