The neighbors on all sides are friendly and welcoming and there is a good sense of community and sharing. 2. Hale Aku's Great Room features a modern functional Henrybuilt kitchen with integrated LED lighting and aluminum paneling on the cabinetry and back wall, the latest Subzero and Wolf appliances, Silvia Pro X espresso machine, Waterstone plumbing fixtures and upper cabinets in American Walnut with sliding walnut and cloudy white glass panels. 3. The furniture has been carefully chosen. The signature piece is a Hans Wegner Flag Halyard chair that is accompanied by Opala Floor Lamp also designed by Hans Wegner for Louis Poulsen. Fitting perfectly into the corner of the Great Room are two teak Indonesian weaving tables that have been custom fit with cushions and round pillows wrapped in batik that make it the ultimate chill sofa for a nap any time of day. A Monkeypod coffee table is nestled into the space that is also fit with a large patchwork tri-color cowhide rug from Argentina. 4. The 20+ ft ceilings of Hale Aku and its Hawaiian hip help create a magical loft space with giant triangular windows on both ends of Hale Aku that use wood and glass louvers to regulate air flow and sunlight and very hip yellow colored plexiglass from the 60s with a Moroccan motif. Koa Wood overhead fans in the Loft and Great Room keep the air circulated and several vintage "Old Havana" pedestal fans have been added to the Great Room and the front and back lanais. 5. Hale Aku has a collection of original Hawaiian art including black and white (B&W) (original photographs from Jerome Ray Baker, Eugene P Lasartemay and Sebastian Romero; vintage B&W acquaint etchings of the Breadfruit Girl and a Hawaiian girl nude by John Melville Kelly; hand engraved B&W etchings by Michele Dick; and an original charcoal and oil painting by Kauai artist and Hakulule'a sailor Keala Kai of his Hawaiian canoe and the Hakulule'a docked at the Hanalei Pier. 6. The outdoor "Zen Den" with its translucent roof, shower, white resin soaking tub, Ipe slat walls, bench and shoji sliding doors with the bronze plumbing fixtures and hardware transport you to the Ryokan Nobu Malibu or a ryokan in Kyoto, Japan. At the front of Hake Aku there is also a convenient footwash for beachgoers - a teak pedestal and duckboard by Tectona complete with a stainless steel handheld shower spray and a stationary footwash. 7. The garden has irrigated and landscaped flower beds with Japanese rain chains pouring into hand carved Paros pots and tumbled lava rocks creekbeds. A crossed legged stone Buddha prays in the shade of a specimen Gardena tree. There are many fruits that can be harvested during the year from the yard including avocados, lemons, tangelos, cherries, bananas, coconuts and sugar cane. 8. The generous back lanai acts as the sanctuary of Hale Aku with its Ipe slat walls and support beams. During the day, it's a great place to work, read, nap or chill. It has been furnished with a comfortable set of teak furniture a sofa, lounge chair, coffee and end tables made from reclaimed teak, two Hans Wegner teak nesting tables and two original French industrial Jielde lamps circa 1960s. During the night, it's a great place to enjoy the evening with friends and family. The setting is very old Hawaii and there is a great "Mana" (spirit or force) that permeates the space with several John Melville "Menu Cover" Hawaiian art pieces hung on the Ipe slat wall, a Hans Werner Opala hanging pendant lamp, a vintage "Old Havana" fan and a rare set of three Christian Liaigre hurricane candle holders (France circa 2000) with a solid bronze base with a clear glass hurricane lamp cylinders on the coffee table. 9. One side of the front lanai serves as a dining area with a large custom Camphor table and matching benches and another hanging white Opala pendant lamp. On the other side of the front lanai is the Weber gas BBQ, a vintage "Old Havana" fan, several Dot dark green barstools by Arne Jacobsen (circa 1950s) and a Japanese style Ipe slat bench designed for stowing footwear and other gear. 10. Hale Aku has 2-3 bedrooms a large master bedroom that adjoins the back lanai as well as a bathroom and a very Zen loft showcasing two large triangular windows at both ends of the A-Frame with views on one side that capture and frame the Hanalei mountains and its waterfalls. The master bedroom has an antique teak mirror and bookcase and an adjoining room turned into a large walk-in closet that could also serve as a small bedroom with twin bed for a toddler or small child. On one side, is a full length bult-in shoji style Mahogany cabinet for hanging clothes and on the other side is a built-in 4 bay wide (9 ft.) modular Vitsoe 606 Universal Shelving System designed by Dieter Rams with plenty of drawers, cabinets, display shelves and a floating desk.
