A stock market panic prompted the state to foreclose, rendering the town's stock worthless. The Shepaug Railroad subsequently changed hands, at one time becoming the Shepaug, Litchfield & Northern, which local wits renamed the "slow, late & noisy." Eventually, the rail line was merged into the New York, New Haven & Hartford system, which kept it in operation for 50 years until the last train chugged through Roxbury Station in 1948.
