    What's special

A unique opportunity to invest in an 8-unit apt. Long-term tenants. Quality updates. New septic system. The Whittemore Block, overlooking Fitzwilliam Common, is known for its distinctive black & gold sign on the center porch. D. Whittemore & Sons operated a general store in the 1850’s from this building, including a drive through, where wagon drivers would receive goods lowered from a pulley wheel located on the third floor. Amazingly, the wheel still exists. The Block, as it’s locally called, originated with a fine Federal style house, which is on the left of the complex. According to town history, a physician built it in 1809. The house has five fireplaces, with original mantelpieces and an impressive, paneled wall in what is now an apartment kitchen. The front living rooms, or “parlors”, have nicer woodwork. It is thought that some of the details are unique to Fitzwilliam. As the 1800’s progressed, Fitzwilliam Common grew to include two inns, a blacksmith shop, a bank, & 2 general stores, 1 containing the local post office. As time went on, the Common was thinned out to be what we see today. Fitzwilliam has often been considered one of the prettiest village centers, with a great Victorian fountain, Civil War monument, & even a working vintage hand pump to serve the garden club’s flowers. The Whittemore Block is part of the Fitzwilliam Historic District. As such, it belongs to a select group of buildings that define Fitzwilliam. Showings begin 10am 05/28/24 w/48 hrs' notice
