Most renters should start looking for an apartment one to three months before their expected move. This timeline allows you to learn about the rental market, tour apartments, and prepare for moving day. Your timing may vary based on how competitive the local market is and whether you’re moving during peak season.

Here’s a typical apartment search timeline to help you prepare and feel confident as you move toward your next home.

2-3 months before moving

Two or three months before you plan to move, take the time to understand the local rental market, narrow down what’s most important to you, and start preparing to pack. That includes:

  • Budget your moving costs and rent using a notepad or online tools. Zillow’s Rent Affordability Calculator can help you estimate how much to spend on rent.
  • Confirm current lease terms so you know when to notify your landlord of your move and about costs for breaking the lease.
  • Define your priorities by making a list of your must-have apartment amenities.
  • Explore the rental market to find apartments that meet your non-negotiables by browsing Zillow’s Renter Search Center.
  • Organize a moving timeline so packing isn’t as stressful.

1-2 months before moving

Now’s the time to look at apartments and prepare your rental application. As you do tours:

  • Compare what you see to your list of must-haves.
  • Consider the noise level and other key qualities to look for in an apartment.
  • Confirm your moving timeline with the landlord or leasing agent. Some units won’t be available for long, so you want to sign a new lease before your move-out date.

In addition, make sure you have all required documentation for the apartment application ahead of time, including pay stubs and references. This’ll make it easier for you to apply quickly when you find a rental you love.

You can schedule an apartment tour with Zillow directly on each apartment listing. Virtual tour options are available on many listing to provide a preview of the apartment before visiting in person. Virtual apartment tours are a quick way to narrow your list and may save you time during your search.

1 month before moving

One month out, most renters are submitting their application, signing the lease, and coordinating moving day details. It’s a busy part of the process, but also exciting.

Review the lease before signing, and be sure you understand the security deposit, any fees, the utilities, and your responsibilities as a tenant. Check for red flags before signing a lease to protect yourself from any potential issues.

1-2 weeks before moving

One to two weeks before moving into your apartment, you’ll be getting ready for the move itself. As you pack up your belongings, make sure to:

  • Confirm move-in details with the landlord or property manager. You may only be able to move in at a certain time of day, for example, or need a special parking permit or elevator access.
  • Set up utilities you’ll be responsible for, such as electricity, water and internet.
  • Purchase renters insurance to protect yourself and your belongings. Decide if you want or need additional coverage for items that may not be covered.

Frequently asked questions

The busiest time for moving into a rental is spring, and specifically February through June, according to Zillow research. If you’re planning to move during this time, it may help to start looking for an apartment at least three months in advance.

Relocating to a new city often takes more planning than a local move, so start looking for an apartment up to six months in advance. The sooner you start, the more time you have to become familiar with the area and the local rental market, learn about neighborhoods and do virtual tours.

An apartment that meets specific needs may be harder to find. If you need an apartment that is pet-friendly, has parking available, accessibility features, or certain layouts, start looking at least three months in advance. That way, you’ll have more time to search for what you need.

You can still find rentals at the last minute. If you have to move quickly, you may need to rely on virtual tours and be more flexible with neighborhoods or amenities.
