Upon graduation from West Chester State University in 1968, he promptly moved to Laurel, Delaware, in 1969 where he accepted a teaching and coaching position at Laurel High School. While there, he helped to coach the football team and was the head coach of the basketball team, which he led to one of the program's first state playoff berths.
