As with all landlords in Manhattan, deposits are always non-refundable if you simply change your mind regarding the apartment after the apartment has been taken off the market for you. If your application is denied for whatever reason- deposits are fully refunded. In several emails it is clearly stated the deposit is non-refundable and would go towards first month of rent or security upon approval. I'm sorry the landlord kept your $500 deposit- but in most instances deposits are 1 month rent so you actually lucked out! :)
