Westin was born in Berkeley, California, and has lived throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, moving frequently as a child. His time in Berkeley, Richmond, Albany, El Cerrito, Hayward, and Oakland—each for a year or more—has given him an in-depth understanding of the region.
