DJ served in the United States Marine Corps as a Reconnaissance Marine and Marine Raider and after 22 years of service was medically retired due to injuries sustained in combat. While on vacation looking for a place to retire, he and his wife Kristen and their four children fell in love with the Black Hills and moved there in 2023.
