Kelly grew up in Southern California and graduated from UCLA with a history degree. Starting in 1984, Kelly began visiting Montana and eventually made a permanent move in 1994 after her undergraduate work was completed. She attended graduate history courses at Montana State University. When Kelly first arrived she made Bozeman her home, but had the opportunity to live along the Madison River in the Three Forks area.
