Sit back and envision your dream rental pad: After a grueling day of work at your high-powered job, you get back to your high-rise and greet the doorman as you take the elevator up to the 41st floor. It’s 7 p.m., and dinner is on the mind. Taking advantage of the chef’s kitchen, you whip up a quick meal, grab a bottle from the wine cellar and enjoy both on the granite kitchen island. Since you have the rest of the night, you ring the concierge and have him book two tickets for whatever’s at the theater.
If the story sounds as luxurious as it does stereotypical, that’s because it’s backed by the data. “Chef’s,” “wine,” “granite,” “island” and “concierge” are among the top terms mentioned in listings for rentals priced in the top third for large cities around the country.
Nationally, the term that appears disproportionately in the top tier is “suite,” a word traditionally reserved for hotels describing a unit with more than just a bedroom. It seems that’s been co-opted by landlords who want to make sure their tenants know they are getting a taste of the high life. It also comes as part of the two-word term, “en suite,” typically referring to a bedroom with an attached bathroom.
The kitchen terms “island,” “custom,” “gourmet,” and “chef’s” indicate that at the higher end, people cook and eat in, custom, gourmet chef’s kitchens with islands (as opposed land in a body of water — we’re not talking about that level of luxury!). “Marble” and “granite” countertops also grace these swanky pads, as do “butler’s” pantries.
At the city level, you get a feel for what defines luxury in different locales. Listing writers – and probably luxury renters — in Las Vegas and Phoenix have affinities for “waterfall” and “travertine” tiles. Sacramento, Calif., and Charlotte, N.C., lean athletic, with mentions of “tennis” and “basketball,” respectively. With the tool below, you can see what makes up the luxe life in your city and others:
