Chatham is a historic South Side neighborhood with a largely residential feel, centered around tree-lined streets and the 79th Street corridor. Its flat Midwestern setting brings warm summers, cold winters, and changing seasons. The neighborhood’s history is reflected in its long-standing commercial streets and local architecture. Parks and recreation areas offer green space and places to play outdoors, while nearby Lake Michigan provides a wider regional escape. Dining ranges from casual restaurants and neighborhood takeout to cafes, with shopping concentrated along 79th Street and other local business corridors. The Chatham neighborhood rental market has a median rent of $1,500 per month and a typical range of $745 to $2,850. Metra Electric and CTA bus service connect the area with other parts of Chicago; driving is another common way to get around.
