While saving the century-old aesthetics, St James-in-the-Woods, an early 1900 Episcopal Chapel, was made into a home in 1998. The project involved an extensive renovation. Inside, a timber-frame truss system of rough-hewn spruce supports the partial 2nd floor. The 2nd floor, with its 2 bedrooms, balcony & bathroom, has a treehouse feel and affords an intimate view of the cathedral ceiling and grand Gothic window in the living room. A master bedroom, full bath & kitchen fit neatly under the framed-in2nd floor. The chapel's half basement was dug out to accommodate family, laundry & utility rooms. The stone building features English Tudor-style gables; their stucco incorporates local pink granite pebbles. Stone walkways & plants were placed around the chapel. Despite the granite cross embedded in one outside wall, the home now has the look of a fairy-tale cottage nestled in 'the old oak grove'. 'Fairy-tale Cottage' is located close to Somes Sound and the Giant Slide Trail.
