A dedicated space to open a book and get lost in its story, surrounded by the scent of pages and overfilled shelves, can offer a comforting escape. And if you dream of having your own private library at home, you’re not alone: Mentions of the term “reading nook” in Zillow home listings are up by nearly 50%.
Libraries and nooks can take many forms, from hardwood built-ins, to shelves with rolling ladders — featured in the Sarasota, Florida home pictured above — to converted fireplaces filled with hardcovers. We’ve compiled our favorite Zillow listings to inspire you for your own at-home library.

When people picture an at-home library, sometimes they see a multi-story space stuffed with hundreds of books, a ladder, a spiral staircase, and dark hardwood all around. Such a library exists in this West Virginia home, complete with hardwood floors to amp up the cozy atmosphere as you get lost in your latest read.

At-home libraries can also have a more modern look, like this one in Houston, Texas. This room blends elements like bright colors and sleek decor with custom lighting, varied shelf heights, and vivid art. It’s hard to ignore the purple velvet sofa, too!

Dreams of a private library can inspire people to use spaces that may otherwise leave them stumped, like the small cut-in room in this California home.

Having an at-home library doesn’t even require an entire room; sometimes, it means repurposing a small space to hold your collection, like the fireplace in this Colorado home.

This Connecticut home was built in 1812, and its library reflects that era. Its deep built-in shelves, broad fireplace, and upholstered furniture all mark a room dedicated to reading, surrounded by hardwood and history. Scroll through the home’s listing photos for more at-home library inspiration and to marvel at the beautifully botanical courtyard.

Sometimes just having a nice, organized place to store your books is enough — no need for a whole room. In South Carolina, this home makes use of its otherwise empty walls in a hallway, complete with a small rug and a stool to reach those higher collections.

If you’re a renter looking to connect with fellow bookworms, consider adding this standout apartment amenity to your must-have list: a library where you can BYOB (bring your own book).. This rental community in Framingham, Massachusetts features a dedicated space complete with comfortable seating and a coordinated blue-and-yellow color palette — down to the books.

Having a library in your home could involve something as simple as repurposing a partial wall or room divider, like this example in Austin, Texas. Adding visual separation and seating transforms what would otherwise be hallway shelving into a distinct, intentional reading space.

Why even leave your bedroom to spend time in your library? Having bookshelves just a couple steps away from your cozy cocoon of blankets and pillows is sometimes the ideal way to get some reading done. This Hawaiian home has a couple sets of floor-to-wall shelves (the other is behind the door, pictured here) in one of its bedrooms.

How about a book to go with your pancakes? In this North Carolina home, the dining room features built-in shelves — a spot more often reserved for fine china — repurposed to display books and vintage decor. Blue-and-white floral wallpaper and arched detailing provides a striking backdrop.

Remember that empty walls can make for great libraries. This home in Hawaii has found a use for a tall, wide wall along its landing: books galore, and some decor, too.
