Zillow combined its home value estimates with geocoding data from Mapping Inequality to analyze neighborhoods the government labeled “best,” “still desirable,” definitely declining” and “hazardous” for lending purposes in the 1930s and ’40s.

The neighborhoods were located in the 151 cities, counties or other geographic areas listed below. In three-quarters of them, formerly redlined neighborhoods now have lower median home values than communities that carried different labels. In 38 areas (with asterisks), the current median home value for historically redlined neighborhoods has climbed past the median for neighborhoods in that geography that were labeled “definitely declining” and, in some cases, past another “still desirable” as well. Only in Haverhill, Mass., has the median for historically redlined areas also risen higher than the median for the neighborhoods once labeled “best.”
